Devil's Claw is a traditional African medicine. The secondary root or "tuber" of Devil's Claw is preferred by herbalists because of its high concentration of beneficial components.
The Devil's Claw extract is standardized to 1.5% harpagoside. Traditionally used as a tonic for joints.
In Europe today, Devil’s Claw is used to treat all types of joint pain, including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout, and soft tissue pain such as back pain. It reduces inflammation and pain, and acts as a diuretic, sedative, and digestive stimulant. Devil’s Claw can also be used to treat liver, gallbladder, kidney problems, and reduce menopausal symptoms.
Medscape Medical News in 2006 reported that Devil’s claw in a controlled study was beneficial to people with low back pain.
