Today, goldenseal is widely used to treat cold and flu symptoms as well as for its antibacterial properties.

The herb can also be used to treat stomach ailments and urinary tract infections. In addition, goldenseal root is often used as a general tonic to strengthen the entire immune system. It is said to have anti-inflammatory properties that can ease inflamed membranes, including those in the eyes, ears, nose, throat and stomach. It may also help to regulate blood sugar levels, aid digestion and relieve constipation.

The alkaloids hydrastine and berberine are the active ingredients in goldenseal. These compounds are capable of destroying bacteria and viruses, as well as relieving inflammation and congestion.

Native Americans used goldenseal to treat skin diseases, wounds and eye inflammation. They introduced goldenseal to early settlers, and the root of the goldenseal plant continues to be used for a wide variety of purposes.

Considered a broad-spectrum herb, goldenseal contains many vitamins and minerals, including the antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, as well as B complex vitamins. Goldenseal also contains the minerals calcium, iron and manganese.
